Organized and developed the National Conference on Wellness and Health Promotion in 1992. Developed as an interdisciplinary conference, it attracts people from all over the United States and Canada.
International Conference on HIV/AIDS Rehabilitation and Education Organized and developed the International Conference on HIV/AIDS Rehabilitation and Education, 1994. Lectures and workshops provide an interdisciplinary focus on HIV rehab and education, attended by people from all over the world.

Developed “Michael Pizzi’s WellShop”, 1994. This workshop is designed to stimulate ideas and strategies about integrating concepts of wellness, holism and health promotion into daily practice. It has an interdisciplinary focus.

RESEARCH

Pediatric AIDS Protocol. Created and implemented the first pediatric AIDS protocol in rehabilitation at the National Institutes of Health entitled “Pediatric HIV infection and its effect on play, activities of daily living, roles and self concept”, approved under expedited review by the National Cancer Institute 9/2/88. Developed protocol and collected data. Data showed increased play and motor skills while on an experimental drug and was used to help expedite the implementation of AZT in pediatric AIDS.

HIV/AIDS Stress Checklist. Researched and developed the stress checklist designed for use with gay men with HIV disease to determine specific individual stressors in order to quickly target clinical occupational therapy interventions.
Self Concept and Children with HIV Disease. Using the Piers Harris Children’s Self Concept Scale, I used a small sample to study the impact of open communication about illness with self concept. Results showed that children who knew their diagnosis had higher self concepts than those with whom there was no communication about their disease.

The Family Assessment of Occupational Functioning. Occupational assessment designed by myself and two other occupational therapists to explore values, roles, expectations, habits and time use of families with a person with disability.

Pizzi Healthy Weight Management Assessment (PHWMA). First interprofessional valid and reliable assessment that examines impact of obesity in daily skill participation for children. Parent/Guardian and child versions (currently being used in research studies by doctoral students across the US). Sent to several countries upon request for use by OT’s in clinical environments.

    Hospice Assessment of Occupational Functioning. Holistic assessment of hospice patients used for clinical data collection (published in Willard and Spackman's Occupational Therapy, 1993).
    Pizzi Assessment of Productive Living. Holistic assessment of productive activity and areas of need for people with HIV disease (published in Willard and Spackman's Occupational Therapy, 1993).
    Occupational Loss Assessment. Explores loss from psychosocial, emotional, physical,social and cultural areas. Used as a clinical tool to help resolve grief issues and underlying issues that can affect clinical treatment.
    Social Environment Interview. Semi-structured interview of family members caring for one who is disabled. Explores social environment level of wellbeing and provides data for occupational therapy intervention.
    Pizzi Healthy Weight Management Assessment. Structured interview of children and caregivers for children who are overweight or obese or at risk for obesity
